Major club successes in their history include the record tumbling Division Four winning side in 1981, Division Three promotion in 1991, the League One title in 2006, cup shocks against the Premier League big boys Manchester United and Chelsea and the play-off successes of 2005 and 2014 – the most recent of which was sealed in the most dramatic fashion at Wembley Stadium as a penalty shootout booked Blues’ return to the third-tier.

As of the 2020–21 season, the team competes in League Two, the fourth tier of English football. Southend are known as “The Shrimpers”, a reference to the area’s maritime industry included as one of the quarters on the club badge.

Founded on 19 May 1906 in the Blue Boar pub, Southend has been a member of the Football League since 1920.

The club is based at Roots Hall Stadium in Prittlewell, with plans to move to a new stadium at Fossetts Farm. Southend have a long-standing rivalry with nearby club Colchester United, with whom they contest the Essex derby.
