The name 1935 Rooftop Restaurant gets it’s name from the year London Southend Airport officially opened as Southend Municipal Airport, on 18th September 1935. The start of the Second World War saw the site requisitioned by the RAF with a number of squadrons from all over the world based at Southend. During this time the runways played home to the Supermarine Spitfires, Hawker Hurricans and Bristol Blenheims.

Temporary changes to dining
To keep you safe, healthy and happy we’ve introduced a few temporary changes to dining at our hotel. In line with government legislation, it is now mandatory to wear a face-covering in all public spaces within our hotel to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Guests are not required to wear a face covering when eating or drinking within the hotel, however a face covering should be worn to and from the table. Children under 11 and those with health issues are exempt from wearing a face-covering.
We’re still offering room service and breakfast options – please have a look at our changes to dining and feel free to contact us if you have any questions!
